Questions for Chris:
What keeps you coming back to Cantus for another season?
I have an unfortunate addiction to both music and money. Cantus is an enabler for both of these chronic conditions.
What was your favorite Cantus experience last season?
I really enjoyed working with the local Baltic community for our “The Singing Revolution” concert series. Meeting and talking with these amazing people and learning about their experiences is something I’ll never forget.
What are you looking forward to most in the 2012-2013 season?
I am looking forward to visiting Oman and Dubai in early 2013. It will be my first trip to the Middle East, and my first time overseas as a part of Cantus.
Who is your favorite singer (any kind) and what is it about their singing that inspires you?
Bobby McFerrin’s voice is so flexible that he can use it to sound like any instrument or sound you can think of (or several you can’t). It’s amazing to hear such a timbral variety, and it’s especially inspiring that all of it comes from the human body, uncorrupted by inhuman instruments.
What music are you listening to now?
Jamiroquai – Rock Dust Light Star
Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique,
Elbow – Build a Rocket
Boys! And Wilco – The Whole Love
What do you love most about living in the Twin Cities?
The Twin Cities is unmatched for its size in terms of music, art, theatre, and food. There really is no other place like it in America, and Cantus is so lucky to call Minnesota home.
Who is your hero? (Real or Fictional)
I am increasingly impressed by Louis CK, who writes, directs, edits, and stars in his own TV show on FX. It is a collection of short films that are an amazing blend of comedy and poignancy.
Who is your favorite SUPER hero?
Probably the Tick, for hopefully obvious reasons.
What is your favorite part of touring?
I love meeting new people and having great conversations about music. Finding new great places to eat is fun, too.
What do you like to do when you’re not making music?
I love spending time with friends, fine dining, pleasant walks in nice weather, a good book, breathing clean air, and being inside on rainy days.
