“Cantus is about more than stylistic accuracy. Their performances speak to the soul.” - StarTribune
There is not a Cantus concert that passes without an audience member telling us how inspired they have been by the music that they’ve heard. Whether it’s a high school student who can see that learning to sing is a life-long skill or an adult who is looking for respite from their daily life, Cantus creates a direct, human connection between the singers and audience. No conductor. No robes. Not even a black folder for music. Standing in their traditional arc, Cantus looks to its audience to complete the circle of the performance experience.
Now in its 14th year as a professional, full-time ensemble, the nine singers of Cantus make their home in the Twin Cities but travel the world to share their unique sound with audiences and schools. Cantus is unique in Minnesota as the only performance group to provide full time salaries for its artists, understanding that singers who have employment security are best suited to carry out our mission and purpose. Cantus serves its home audience with a lively season of concerts, collaborations with Twin Cities’ arts organizations such as the Guthrie Theatre and TPT, and outreach opportunities. In addition, Cantus works with three area high school choruses each year at no charge in regular workshops culminating in a high-spirited concert with the school choirs and Cantus!
