Cantus High School Residency

Every year, Cantus brings its collaborative style of music-making at no cost to three high school choirs in the Twin Cities metro area.  The Cantus High School Residency was awarded the Chorus America Education Outreach Award in 2011. The residency is a multi-faceted, year-long program which includes:

  • Master classes and collaborations with the singers of Cantus at each high school during their normal class period;
  • A free in-school concert for the high school;
  • Free tickets to Cantus home concerts (fall, spring, June “Covers”);
  • A “Festival” day where schools and directors work together to rehearse and learn;
  • A culminating concert in spring 2020 featuring the high school choirs and Cantus.

Cantus will work closely with the choral directors to determine repertoire and schedules. It is expected that Cantus will be in the choir room approximately 3-4 times a year as school and touring schedules allow. The singers of Cantus spread their love of singing by working with choir students and directors to improve vocal skills and expand choral repertoire.

 This program is offered completely free-of-charge to participating schools. Other FAQ:

  • Three schools are chosen from applications: one in the urban Twin Cities, one in the suburban Metro and one in the exurban Metro. Cantus will travel a maximum of one hour (via Google maps) to reach your school.
  • An application consists of the cover sheet, a recent recording of your choir and three letters of support from students, parents and the school administration.

The application deadline for the 2019–2020 school year is November 30, 2018.
